Plastic Surgery Procedures that are Rare in a Down Economy

Plastic Surgery Comments (3)

With bad economic news coming daily, people are allocating their dollars more carefully while making spending decisions.

Rent or house payments, for instance, must come before three week vacations, pricey dinners out and, well, hey, I’m sure you get the idea.

It’s the same in cosmetic plastic surgery. A face that is always visible gets attention before, oh, just to pick an example at random, an “outie” belly button your teenage daughter wants surgically rendered into an “innie.”

So first up on the list of plastic surgery procedures people often do without during hard times is:

  • Umbilicoplasty

The umbilicoplasty changes an “innie” to an “outie” (or vice-versa) while neatly removing pouts from adolescent faces that just cannot live with the wrong belly button. Cost of the plastic surgery:  $500 to $2000.

Alternative: keep the navel covered.

  • Foot facelifts

During the sandal season, many want more attractive feet. So they visit plastic surgeons specializing in procedures generally known as “foot facelifts.”

In addition to the usual bunion and corn removal, these foot rejuvenation specialists also offer:

  • Toe shortening (also known as “toe tucks.”)

Some women hate it when their second and third toes jut out past their big toes. So they have those long toes surgically shortened.

  • Brachymetatarsia.

Others are embarrassed by stubby toes and want them lengthened.

Cost of the plastic surgery foot procedures: around $5000, plus a lot of recovery time on crutches. (Painful trivia factoid: the feet support the weight of the whole body!)

Alternative: Didn’t your mother always tell you to wear sensible, sturdy shoes? Now’s the time for clunky shoes, given that the only jobs available involve manual lifting and lots of lifting in warehouses.

  • Cankle surgery

Embarrassment and shame continues among people with fat ankles, often shortened to “cankles.” That procedure is done by liposuction. Potential savings: $1200 to $3000. Possible alternative: wear long pants.

  • Knee liposuction

Flabby knees are also a truly terrible burden but you might not want to sell the farm to have the procedure. Potential savings: up to $3000. Alternative: See Cankle surgery.
