Lap Band Surgery Helps Obese Teens

We live in a fat, fat world.

For adults, having 100 or more excess pounds is a medical condition known as morbid obesity.

It’s called “morbid” because the extra weight is almost guaranteed to bring on at least one of a host of other health woes like Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and other problems.

Nonetheless, 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, including 60 million obese people and 9 millionĀ  severely obese, according to the American Obesity Association.

But obesity can be worse for teens. If you are 16 and tip the scales at, say, 385 pounds, you’ll be taunted and teased without mercy from other teenagers.

According to a study in the professional journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, teenagers who have bariatric surgery do better and recover quicker than older patients who have the same surgery. Plus, more teens than ever are having the surgery.

Due to so many obese teens and adults, bariatric surgery, a growing field of medicine offers various procedures to reduce the size of the stomach. But many are fraught with risk because the stomach and intestines are operated on.

Nonetheless, the surgery is effective. With a stomach reduced to the size of an egg, the patient can only hold a few bites of food. It’s not unusual for a bariatric patient to lose 100 to 150 or more pounds during the first year after the surgery.

But bariatric patients still must pay strict attention to diet and exercise.

Among other side effects, the patient is usually left with sheets of loose skin hanging on the stomach, legs, arm and chest. All that drooping skin flaps around when the person exercises and makes sitting difficult because loose skin on the buttocks slides around.

Plus, it’s very hard for the patient to find clothing that fits. (View lap band before and after pictures.)

The loose skin creates its own set of health woes but can be remedied by a plastic surgeon performing body shaping procedures like an arm lift or a thigh lift.
