Eyelid Surgery Really is More Bang for the Buck

Eyelid Surgery Comments (0)

Plastic surgeons and people who know a lot about rejuvenation surgery have always advised: if you can afford only a little cosmetic plastic surgery (and your eyelids are sagging or baggy!) choose  eyelid surgery.

That advice is mostly because an upper or lower eye lift procedure is:

  • Quicker and does not require a lot of  time under the knife
  • Not an involved recovery process
  • A procedure that makes a big difference in your appearance
  • More reasonable in cost

But you know how it is with opinions. Everybody has at least one!

Now, there is some evidence that people look at the eye area first to judge if you are:

  • Old
  • Tired
  • Fatigued

Reporting in the February, 2009, issue of Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Peter A.D. Rubin, M.D., a professor of ophthalmology, studied how strangers decide if you are old, tired or worn out.  (And may be unsuited for a new job, a date or a mate!)

Dr. Rubin recruited 47 college students and asked them to look at pictures of 48 older people for five seconds on a computer monitor.

Unbeknownst to the students, a special camera system analyzed and recorded exactly where their eyes were looking  while ranking age and then fatigue.

When asked about age, 46 percent looked at the eyes and the area around the eyes.

To decide about fatigue, the subjects eyeballed the same area 44.7 percent of the time.

Because the eye area only takes up 21 percent of the facial area, Dr. Rubin writes: “clearly this area is disproportionately important.”

One of the main reasons Dr. Rubin started the study was to give better information for people considering plastic surgery.

You could also say beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder, it’s also in the eye of the beholdee!

Anyhow, Dr. Rubin’s next study will rate age and fatigue based on people’s perceptions when they look at before and after eyelid surgery pictures of real patients.

We’re hanging on treble hooks for that one! Because the study should give us a scientifically-based idea about how many years eyelid surgery can knock off your real or perceived age.
