Facial implants are biocompatible, synthetic materials that are used to balance a disproportionate facial feature such as sunken cheeks, “weak” jaw, and recessed chin. Meanwhile, the safety of these implants has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, although there are still some possible risks just like in any plastic surgery which must be considered.

The ideal candidates for this procedure are patients who want to make a certain facial feature more defined. For example, men with a weak jaw that almost disappears from their neck which makes them look effeminate, individuals with sunken cheeks which make them appear old, and people with recessed chin can benefit from this plastic surgery approach.

Facial implant surgery is usually performed by board-certified plastic surgeons in an outpatient surgery center, hospital, or doctor’s office. If performed as a standalone procedure, this usually takes about 30 minutes to one hour. (Megan Fox, shown in the photo below, is rumored to have cheek implants.)

Meanwhile, plastic surgeons may conduct this under local anesthesia in which their patients are awake but heavily sedated or general anesthesia which can put them to a state similar to sleep.

In recent years, the most commonly used facial implants are for chin, jaw, and cheeks surgery. For some patients, they may need more than one type of implant in order to achieve facial harmony.

In cheek implant surgery, plastic surgeons create an incision under the lower eyelid or inside of the mouth near the upper lip. In this way, they can make a small pocket where the synthetic material can be secured.

After placing the cheek implants, doctors will check if the appearance is symmetrical before they put sutures to close the incisions and a bandage to reduce the swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the surgical site.

For patients who will receive chin implant, doctors will create a discreet incision under the chin or inside the lower lip where they can insert the synthetic material and secure this to a pocket, bone, or soft tissue.

And for people who will undergo a jaw implant procedure, surgeons make the incision on either side of the lower lip and then create a pocket where they can secure the material. After this, they will suture the incision and put a tape around the chin to reduce swelling and discomfort.

During the first few days of recovery, most patients will experience some mild soreness, swelling, discomfort, and tight feeling in the surgical site. To alleviate such physical symptoms, they will be advised to take pain medications and other drugs, eat “soft” foods, and avoid strenuous activities at least a week after their plastic surgery.

Extraordinary good looks

Flawless complexions

No, not a model’s convention or even looking through the books of plastic surgery before and after pictures in a surgeon’s office.

You are probably at the movies!

Beverly Hills is often regarded as the world Mecca of plastic surgery because it sits cheek-by-jowl with the U.S. entertainment industry.

You know, Tinsel Town!

Even less than perfect celebrity plastic surgery has found a marketplace in tabloids of the world, with websites and magazines showing graphic pictures when plastic surgery goes wrong on the world’s most popular faces and bodies.

In an industry where appearance is everything, Hollywood Knives, a major documentary on BBC1 (British Broadcasting Corporation Channel 1) dug behind the scenes, interviewed top plastic surgeons, former spouses of stars and others to reveal what plastic surgeries major movie performers have had.

What did they find?

Screen legend Marilyn Monroe had a chin implant after a photographer called her a “chinless wonder.” Two weeks later, she got her first movie roll.

Rita Hayworth had a full face lift in the 1960s, just as she was starting to show the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Clark Gable had ear pinning (otoplasty) and his teeth fixed.

Burt Lancaster had a facelift.

Dean Martin had rhinoplasty to make his nose straighter and narrower.

Gary Cooper had a face lift and a double chin slimmed through neck surgery at age 53.

John Wayne: neck surgery, face lift and upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), also in his 50s.

Frank Sinatra, born in a forceps delivery that caused scarring on his neck and removed part of his left earlobe, had the scars removed in his 60s, along with a facelift and jowl surgery.
