After Plastic Surgery: Do You Tell Others?
You’ve had surgery, you are on your way to healing but you’ve got a few bruises. Do you tell others why?
Well, first take comfort in a study done by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) showing that young adults, ages 18 to 34, are more approving of cosmetic surgery.
In particular, the study of 1000 teens and young adults over 18 revealed that, among all age groups, 78 percent of women and 79 percent of men would not be embarrassed if others knew they had cosmetic surgery.
That’s an enlightened attitude but that leaves at least 21 percent of people who would be embarrassed to admit to plastic surgery. What does that group do?
Fortunately, cosmetic plastic surgeons are equipped to help when you are mostly healed and feel like going back to work or mixing with people but still have a few bruises. And want to stay mum.
The easiest to spot patients will have had:
- Rhinoplasty
- Face lift
- Eyelid lifts
- Forehead lifts
Many rhinoplasty patients just say their nose job was medically necessary to ease breathing.
Your plastic surgeon will give you instructions on how to take care of yourself in the days and weeks after plastic surgery (see our blog post on one of the best ways to care of yourself after plastic surgery.)
For those facial bruises, a wide variety of camouflage makeup is available for both men and women.
Facial surgery patients usually have small, but obvious, bruises remaining after three or four days. That’s where camouflage makeup comes in. Also known as paramedical or corrective makeup, here’s how to remember its purpose, often known as the “Three C’s:
- Conceal — Hides bruises
- Contour — Hides the swelling
- Color correction — Tones down red (after some skin procedures ) and yellow (bruises that show up after surgery.)
If you’ve had any type of body liposuction or breast surgery like a breast lift, compression garments will help your procedure heal. Under clothing, compression garments are rarely visible.
